Welcome to the world of sim racing dashboards. This is one way that we can endlessly customize our setup, or in most cases, use pre-built dashboards. While in Sim Racing, the reality of digital dashboards is that they are mostly aesthetic, for the majority of users. With that being said though, they are cool as hell and they do provide a lot of useful data, and not to mention the amount of custom programming that can be done.
Dashboards act as the control hub for the car you are driving, displaying vital information like speed, RPM, fuel data and so much more. The instant feedback enables more precise and informed driving, closely simulating the experience of being in a real race car.
SimHub is a key tool in customizing your racing experience, serving as a bridge between your game and hardware. It allows for the customization and enhancement of your dashboard’s functionality and support a broad range of devices and games, making it a versatile choice for sim racers.
In some cases, you may see a message when you first open SimHub prompting you to configure telemetry. This is a quick process that ensures SimHub is communicating with your simulator software properly.
SimHub support an extensive array of devices. Whether you are working with a Rexing Mayaris or an Ascher DDU, SimHub facilitates the integration of your device. This section will guide you through the process of adding and setting up your device within SimHub.
Your main dashboard will be the dashboard that will display as a default whenever you launch into a car. The Idle Behavior function will take over once the simulator session has been exited. In the next session I will dive a little deeper into how I have it set up, but I personally love a clean and simple dashboard as the Idle dash so that when the rig is sitting idle, it’s damn beautiful.
The dashboard playlist is something I highly recommend you take a little bit of time to set up. It’s a one time set up, that will save you a ton of time and hassle in the future. With the dashboard playlist, you can assign specific dashboards to specific cars. This means you can change cars and the dashboards will automatically change as long as you configured it in the playlist first.
There are a number of ways to find dashboards online, but www.overtake.gg formerly www.racedepartment.com host most of the dashboards available. Usually a simple google search of iRacing Dash (Car Name) will turn up a dashboard result. Once you find your dashboard and download the file, chances are it will download as a zip file. You will need to click “extract all” at the top of the window in order to extract the files. Once you click this a new window will open revealing the file for the dashboard. Double click it, and when prompted, click import into library. You will then find the dashboard in your dashboard library.
These dashboards are open-source, meaning that they are someone’s creation being given away for free. Many take hours to produce and configure and I personally thank the community for this because I would have never learned any of it if it wasn’t for the community.
Custom dashboards are more than just a visual upgrade; they’re a functional enhancement that can significantly improve your racing performance and enjoyment. With SimHub and the supportive sim racing community, the possibilities are limitless.
